The client
Thompsons Of Macclesfield is a 60 year established business that has a retail store and two websites, as well as a presence on the marketplaces such as eBay and Amazon and own brand products served from a warehouse in another country.
The challenge
A multi branch, multi currency, multi sales channel environment presents a steep challenge for any software that sells itself as being an end to end solution.
Thompsons needed a solution for managing and selling the stock internationally in the external warehouse as well as myriad other problems.
An out-dated existing system provided by a competitor was inconsistent in behaviour around stock (dangerous where sales are made on marketplaces with strict performance metrics) and extremely unintuitive to use which was limiting growth of their selection on the various sales platforms.
The solution
Beginning with the data, the work that we did at Modern Seller to help Thompsons convert their business to our platform actually took the approach of cleaning, streamlining and refining as much as it did converting the format. Much of the data was damaged or diluted by the previous system, which had allowed too much freedom to inexperienced users, resulting in fragmentation. The final data set is easier and faster to use and of course designed specifically to upload to Modern Seller.
In terms of the software and the way it integrates with the business practises at Thompsons we were able to work with the staff in the warehouse, office and on the shop floor to point out where our implementation would bring key benefits to accuracy and speed.
During the go-live period we provided Thompsons with one-on-one support to minimise any disruption that switching the systems might cause and so that the key people in the organisation had access to the training needed to be able to operate Modern Seller.
The final outcome is significant financial saving as well as direct and easy control over every aspect of the business.

With our old system, when an item was out of stock or discontinued the base listing would stay on Amazon, leaving us open to penalties! With Modern Seller the listings delete automatically when the items are gone, so our exposure is minimal.

Right click to quickly copy important references to make it easy to use Search alongside the other apps.
Inventory
View your inventory in an unprecedented level of detail. Set maximum weights and inventory values for locations. Open and close locations using an innovative parent and child tree structure. Move items around with the drag of a mouse. Make notes, change transit costs, view items that are committed to orders. Create stock orders, book stock in on screen or via import.
Packing
Complete solution to pick and pack in your warehouses. Consignment based system that allows combining of orders, change of services, stock allocation and SKU allocation. Extensive search capability to allow the operative to get exactly the orders that they want to work on. Use picking ID’s and location search to allow multiple people to work without inconveniencing each other. Send partial orders with delivery note, handle click and collect orders.
Support modules
A suite of complementary applications exist that are used, for instance, to define and refine courier providers and their services, handle eBay listing templating and listing pre-requisites or to discover category or ASIN information on Amazon.
Meet the Modern Seller Team
Chris Graves, our director and programmer, was born in 1993 and lives in Cheshire in the UK. He is keen football enthusiast and is interested in everything to do with consoles and computers. Chris graduated from MMU with a degree in Computers in 2013.
Julian Thompson, our director and system designer was born in 1975 and also lives in Cheshire. He is interested in motorsport. Julian attended the Kings School in Macclesfield and runs his family business alongside Modern Seller Ltd.
Modern seller has taken over 7 years to design and build, starting with a clean sheet situation and trying to create best of breed functions. Every single aspect of the system has been built by people who have had access to a real, running business at every step, so that every function works in a way that minimises the need to bend business practices to fit the software.

Modern Seller is priced extremely attractively and fairly. We scale our pricing according to the amount of inventory, sales and staff that you have, because this directly correlates to our costs to provide the services.
Modern Seller runs on an AWS database which offers unmatched uptime and data security.
An average implementation period would be around 8 weeks from start to finish, but does obviously depend on the level of complexity created by the needs of the client.
The system runs on Windows, and requires basic software such as Adobe Acrobat Reader and Microsoft Office / Excel 2013 or newer.
Connection to peripherals is always difficult and unreliable via browser based systems, as well as the constant nuisance of page time out and back buttons. Windows provides rock solid stability and ensures that only your actual data needs to be transmitted, instead of the need for us to serve your complete operating environment.
